Volunteers and Research Associates, continued
Greg Norwood, Volunteer (bird surveys)
Greg Norwood of Dearborn has been helping out with bird surveys since 1997 when he was just entering his teen years. Young and impressionable, those experiences led him to pursue his degree in biology here at UM-Dearborn, when he was also an active bird bander. Greg is now a biological technician for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.
Robert A. Schubert, Volunteer (special projects)
Robert is a UM-Dearborn graduate who has frequently helped out with field site maintenance. In 2011, Robert will be conducting a two-point study on White-tailed Deer. He’ll be doing standardized pellet count surveys to determine population size on campus, and examining pellets for seeds (much like our bird diet analysis) to reveal which plant species are being consumed and dispersed by the local deer herd. Robert is on the field crew of the Ann Arbor Natural Areas Preservation department, where he works on habitat restoration.
Jerry Sadowski, Volunteer (bird surveys)
Jerry Sadowski of Lincoln Park has done bird surveys for RRBO since 1994. Jerry has a professional photography background, and many in the region know him as the “Birder on staff” at local camera shops where he has worked. Jerry has long been active in other conservation organizations, including the Michigan Nature Association and Whitefish Point Bird Observatory.
Where are they now?
Many former RRBO volunteers have gone on to careers in ornithology, ecology, or the environment. Read about them at the Net Results blog.
